What is VOC?

What is a VOC?

VOC stands for “Volatile Organic Compound.”

Organic compounds make up all living things and are essentially any molecules containing carbon and other elements, such as hydrogen and oxygen. You can find organic compounds naturally in the environment, or they can be man-made.

Whether natural or synthetic, organic compounds are “volatile” if they can be vaporized and emitted as a gas at normal room temperature. A common example of a natural VOC is the gas emitted from pine trees, which creates the distinct smell of a pine forest. Synthetically produced VOCs are created by various chemical reactions and intended for use in (and then emitted into the air by) household and industrial products.
